How to plan a 1950s Wedding - Louise Rose Couture (2024)

How to plan a 1950s Wedding - Louise Rose Couture (1)Vintage never goes out of style and it’s no surprise that 50s style weddings continue to be so popular now. From the outfits, to the decor, you can really create a great retro vibe that your guests will remember. It’s a style full of fun and glamour, in equal measures!

Here are some key ideas to get you started with planning your 50s wedding that will set off your big day perfectly; featuring a photo shoot with a team of fabulous wedding suppliers to kick start your inspiration! With made to order & custom items on offer, you can really make every aspect of your big day unique to you as a couple and make it a day to remember.

Bridal Style

Tea length wedding dresses are made for this style of wedding. 1950s wedding dresses featured nipped in waists and full skirts, and tea length hemlines. This style is not only flattering, timeless and glamorous, but also fun to wear and perfect for dancing and twirling the night away! You can also add a splash of colour by going for a contrasting petticoat, belt, or a different coloured dress entirely – when you go for custom made, there really are no limits! Opt for gorgeous all over lace for a vintage vibe, or go minimal in a plain mikado or satin for a modern chic edge to the retro look.

A bird cage veil will really compliment your 50s bridal look. This stunning one featured here is by The Candy Hat Company.

When going for a short wedding dress, you can show off your shoes in all their glory! Finish your outfit with a pair of statement heels, or a pair of custom wedding converse. I love this idea and you will be able to dance the night away, pain free too, bonus!

Colour scheme

A blue, red and white nautical theme lends itself so well to the 50s theme (particularly for this photo shoot here on the beach)! If nautical isn’t your thing, pastels and floral prints are also perfect for this look.

The great thing about 50s dresses is that whatever colour palette you opt for, you can add contrast colour petticoats underneath, adding extra fun and colour to your bridesmaid dresses or your bridal look!

Hair & Make-up

If you want to go for the full 50s look, opt for victory rolls, or if you are looking for more subtle styling, some soft waves or curls finished off with some hair accessories will look equally gorgeous. Red lipstick is always a classic look for the vintage style, there is a shade of red for everyone – from vibrant to a deep hue.

Photography and photo booth

Photo booth’s are perfect for a vintage wedding – but this one is no ordinary photo booth! Gertie the Photo Bus is a beautiful blue camper van transformed into a booth for your big day. She will make a fabulous addition to your wedding. With a wide variety of props included, it will keep your guests well entertained and having fun – from the kids to the adults.

Of course, an absolute must is to make sure you’ve got your professional photographer booked for your date. Having a professional makes ALL the difference, rather than relying on friends and family to capture the day for you. You only get one shot, photos create memories and you can’t recreate these special moments! Leesha Williams has captured the images here perfectly.

Flowers

You can add further pops of colour with your flowers. Round handtied bouquets create the perfect 50s shape, think blooms such as peonies and roses. If you want to go for something alternative, The Feltorium creates these super pretty felt bouquets, I love how you can get really rich colours and a different look by opting for this option.

A band

A live band sets off any wedding, but if you want to get all your guests dancing, a great rock ‘n’ roll band is the perfect choice. It appeals to both the younger and the older guests, it creates a great vibe and it’s impossible to not want to get up and join in (not to mention how amazing your dress will look when your spinning and twirling!).

Enjoy the rest of the photos from the shoot and I hope it gives you some more inspiration of how you can translate these ideas into your own wedding day – we’d love to hear how you get on!
