This DIY Natural Lotion Bar recipe makes a sweet-smelling, moisturizing lotion bar that uses all-natural ingredients and works well to soften the skin.

As you probably have realized by now I like to make things myself when I can. Beauty products are fun to experiment with and with just a few items you can make just about anything. Having a teenage daughter to share them with has made this all the more enjoyable for me. We often make them together as little projects to do together to pass the time.

I want her to have and use natural products that work. And for moisturizing these do. I like to use these on my feet at night just before bed before putting socks on. They work well to soften even the driest skin and in a pinch, they make great gifts as well.

Add Ins

The bars themselves will have a light sweet scent from the cocoa butter. Which I love. However, if you are wanting to add some benefits and scents from essential oils, you can. Here are some of my favorite oils to use in these natural lotion bars.

Rose Essential Oil- Rose essential oil offers a lovely floral scent that pairs nicely with the scent of the cocoa butter in these bars. Rose essential oil not only has a popular scent but has calming benefits to both the mind and body.

Lavender Essential Oil- This essential oil is great for the whole family. Lavender has a sweet scent that is both evergreen and floral at the same time. It is an incredibly popular essential oil to use. With calming benefits, anti-inflammatory properties, and the ability to reduce blemishes. It is an excellent choice to use in natural beauty products.

Sweet Orange- Another great option that will add not only a great scent to these natural lotion bars. But one that also has many benefits when used on the skin. Sweet orange is known for its ability to fight free radicals that age the skin. It can reduce dark spots or blemishes due to the power of Vitamin C. While also promoting cell growth and collagen synthesis.

Jasmine- Another popular essential oil often used for its lovely scent. Jasmine essential oil has a sweet, rich, and fruity scent. It is excellent for people with sensitive skin as Jasmine offers a calming effect on both itching and inflammation. It helps to soothe dry skin and is a great add-in for those who suffer from eczema.

How To Add Essential Oils In

Adding essential oils into a batch of natural lotion bars is easy! You will need to move a little quickly for this. From the moment you remove the mixture from the heat, it will begin to set. Remove the blend from the heat with a heatproof glove. Set it in your workspace. Add the essential oils immediately and mix with a rubber spatula. Then pour the blend into the awaiting soap molds. I add about 10-15 drops per batch. But you can add a little more or less depending on your desired scent strength.

Tips

• Have a workspace set up before starting. Soap mold ready, a spatula handy and any essential oils ready to use.
• If using a bowl over a saucepan in place of a double boiler. You can use a piece of foil to place over the bowl to help melt the cocoa butter and beeswax a bit faster.

What You Will Need To Make Them

1 cup of each:

raw cocoa butter

coconut oil

white beeswax pellets

double boiler or a glass bowl with small sauce pot

a mold for soaps or DIYS

pot holders or a heat protective towel

kitchen spatula

Directions

You will need a double boiler or you can make one by simply taking a sauce pot, adding a bit of water, and placing a glass bowl inside over medium heat.

Place all the ingredients inside the double boiler and allow them to melt together. Make sure to stir to help the process along. It may take several minutes for the beeswax to melt all the way through. You can opt to add a piece of foil to the top to help move the process along a bit faster.

Once melted remove from heat.

Then using a heat-protective glove or using a pot holder take the bowl out and pour the mixture into an awaiting soap mold evenly filling each insert.

Allow the lotion bars to harden completely before removing them from the mold.

How To Store

• Store them at room temperature or in a cool dry place.
• The bars will hold their shape due to the beeswax but can melt if left in a warmer location due to the coconut oil.
• Parchment paper works great for wrapping these bars individually to store. Or these natural bakery bags also do the trick nicely.
