What to say when your child doesn t want to go to daycare? ›

If your child doesn't want to talk when you ask them why they don't want to go to daycare, don't push them. Asking too many questions can make their stress and anxiety worse. Just let them know that you're there for them if they need to talk.

Acknowledge Their Feelings

Acknowledging their emotions is an important part of helping them cope with morning transitions. You might say: I see that you're sad that I'm leaving. I will miss you, too. I'll be back to pick you up after you have recess this afternoon.

When an infant, toddler or pre-schooler is faced with their number one person (mum) leaving them in the care of someone who is at number seven (or worse, someone they're unfamiliar with), they'll often become fearful. This stranger anxiety develops in tandem with separation anxiety. They might feel unsafe.

Speak to your child

It's important to try and gain an understanding of what's going on. Depending on the age of your child, it might be easy to talk to your child about why they don't want to go to nursery. You can then explain why they need to go in and discuss how you could make them feel better.

Show that you understand how they're feeling. Remind your child of the good things they'll miss if they stay home. Give them some control over their lives, like letting them choose their clothing, morning snack or weekend activity.
